absolute value equation

If an equation contains a variable such as x inside the absolute value, then it is called the absolute value equation. For example, |x + 2| = 3 is an absolute value equation. The |x + 2| = 3 means x + 2 is located 3 units from 0. In other words, x is located 3 units from -2. The x can be located either 3 units to the left from -2 or 3 units to the right from -2.

absolute value equation

Therefore, the solution for |x + 2| = 3 is x = -5 or x = 1.

Steps for solving absolute value equation: e.g. |x + 2| = 3

  1. Take out the absolute value notation and write two equations.
    x + 2 = 3 OR x + 2 = -3
  2. Solve for x. x = 1 or x = -5
  3. The solution of an absolute value equation is usually shown on a number line. absolute value equation
