The What, When, Where, How, Why and Who?

What is Chalk Talk?
Chalk Talk Tutorials are online lessons in high school math and science. Students are invited to participate through the following features:

  • students listen as the teacher presents the topic
  • students can send their questions to the teacher
  • teachers ask the students questions, which they can answer on-screen
  • students control a Satisfaction Meter to let the teacher know if they are understanding the lesson
  • teachers use students' feedback to adjust their speed or approach
  • teachers write on a whiteboard to do a step-by-step walkthrough of questions and answers
  • students can take an online quiz.

When are Tutorials scheduled?
Tutorials are scheduled on selected evenings Sunday to Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m. and lasting 1.5 to 2 hours. For specific dates and times, check the schedule.

Where do I access the Tutorial?
Tutorials are live and online, so you can access them from any computer with an Internet connection. At the scheduled time, go to the Main Page and click the Launch button.

How does it work?
Chalk Talk is entirely web-based, so no special software is needed. Pop-up blockers should be disabled during the Tutorial. Students must be registered and logged in to gain access to the Tutorial. We suggest you come to the Launch page ten minutes before the Tutorial starts and log in, and test the sound output of your computer. Make sure your computer speakers are working. You can probably test the level of sound by going to the volume settings on your computer. There is no limit to the number of students, so there’s room for everyone.

Why was Chalk Talk developed?
Ask a Teacher and the Independent Learning Centre have long been known as rich resources of learning materials and services. Chalk Talk Tutorials take the "virtual classroom" to a new level and students anywhere, of any ability, can participate in a dynamic learning experience.

Who is Chalk Talk meant for?
You, that’s who! Chalk Talk is for anybody, but is specifically designed to offer help in Ontario high school math and science. The Tutorials are scheduled to roughly coincide with when the topic is being taught in the classroom.
If you still have questions, they are probably answered in the FAQs.
