Elementary Courses

The ILC's elementary program for Grades 1 - 8 can assist you in educating your child to Ontario Ministry of Education standards. It is suitable for home-schooling parents or for parents on temporary work assignments outside Canada who want their children to continue following the Ontario curriculum.

ILC courses fulfil the 2004 Ontario Ministry of Education's curriculum expectations and standards. Programs are available for the following subjects and grades:

  • Grades 1-3 subjects (integrated): Arts, English, Math, Social Studies, and Science
  • Grades 4-6 subjects: Arts, English, Math, Social Studies, and Science
  • Grades 7-8 subjects: Arts, English, Math, Science, History, and Geography

Note: the ILC program does not include French as a Second Language or Health and Physical Education.

How ILC Elementary Courses Work

Students generally enrol in August for the new school year and are placed in an age-appropriate grade. Once a student is enrolled, the ILC will mail all the course materials to the parent.

The ILC elementary program is designed to help the teaching parent instruct the student. Each grade program consists of over 300 pages of material, including notes to assist the adult teacher or parent, a year-at-a-glance overview, learning objectives, detailed instructions for daily and weekly activities, suggested useful resources and websites, and links to the Ministry's curriculum guidelines.

For more information, see sample lessons and required textbooks.

Course Structure and Marking

Each grade consists of three terms of work and must be completed within 10 months. At the end of each unit in the material students complete Key Questions in the Course Journal provided. The parent mails the Course Journal to the ILC's certified Ontario teachers for marking and feedback. The Course Journal also serves to record progress and for correspondence with teachers. There are no formal tests.

ILC teachers will report on a student's progress by completing a Teacher's Evaluation page for each unit completed.

The ILC's comprehensive program meets the 2004 Ontario Ministry of Education's curriculum expectations for each grade. However, ILC has not been able to revise the elementary program to address the most recent curriculum expectations. For this reason, ILC does not issue an Ontario Provincial Report Card. Please refer to the current Ministry of Education elementary curriculum document.

Students must complete successfully all subjects within the grade in order to enrol in the next grade.
