Description de cours

This course provides you with the fundamental knowledge of and skills relating to environmental science that will help you succeed in life after secondary school. You will explore a range of topics, including the role of science in addressing contemporary environmental challenges; the impact of the environment on human health; sustainable agriculture and forestry; the reduction and management of waste; and the conservation of energy. You will increase your scientific and environmental literacy and examine the interrelationships between science, the environment, and society in a variety of areas.

Unit 1: Human Health and the Environment

In this unit, you’ll learn about the sources and health effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, heavy-metal pollution, and water pollution. You’ll also learn about a variety of initiatives intended to reduce the impact of these environmental contaminants.

In the Key Question for this unit you’ll answer questions and write reports on real-life cases where the environment of a community affected the health of its residents. You will need to do research on the Internet.

Unit 2: Conservation of Energy

In this unit, you’ll learn about different methods of generating electricity, including alternative methods that use renewable energy sources and pollute the environment less. You’ll also learn ways to reduce electricity consumption. By making informed decisions, individuals, government agencies, and industries can ensure an adequate supply of electricity in the future while protecting the environment and our health.

In the Key Questions for this uni,t you will write reports contrasting different methods of electrical power generation, such as hydroelectric and nuclear. You will also conduct an electrical audit on a home and make proposals on the most efficient way to insulate a home. Finally, you will create a mock interview with a participant in the World Solar Challenge.

Unit 3: Reducing and Managing Waste

Every time you make a purchase, you end up with something to throw away. It may be a bag to carry home your purchase, it may be the packaging that comes with the product, or it may be the item the new purchase is replacing. Some of this waste can be recycled and some can be reused, but a lot of it is simply taken to the curb as trash. Have you ever wondered what happens to the waste once it’s out of your sight? You’ll discover the answer to that question in this unit. You’ll also learn about current waste-management strategies and the impact they have on our economy and environment. And you’ll find out about strategies used in other parts of the world that we might be able to use in the future.

In the Key Questions for this unit, you will use the Internet to research the life cycle of a consumer product. You will also write reports about landfills, recycling, and methods of dealing with different types of waste.

Unit 4: Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry

Two important sectors of the Ontario economy are agriculture and forestry.  From an economic standpoint, it is important to manage these resources well. Good management means sustainable practices.

In this unit, current agriculture and forestry practices are described with a focus on environmental, economic, and human-health issues. The role soil plays in optimal plant growth is studied in detail, along with various methods of maintaining and improving soil quality. The unit concludes with a lesson on the challenges of cultivating plants in urban areas.

In the Key Questions for this unit, you will research and write a report about organophosphate insecticides. You will also do a cost-benefit analysis of Genetically Modified (GM) crops and of clear-cutting. Finally, you will create a flyer inviting the community to an information meeting on a proposed butterfly garden to be constructed in a nearby park.
