Unit 1: Understanding Media
You begin by learning the language of media. You will examine the vocabulary, grammar and style of a variety of media forms such as posters, advertisements, photographs, news stories, videos, songs, and more. You’ll learn to critically interpret the meaning of media texts and to express yourself in this new language by producing your own. In the Key Questions for this unit you’ll deconstruct media images, design a marketing campaign targeted to different audiences, and create a comic.
Unit 2: The Impact of Images
This unit explores the power of images to convey meaning and messages. It reinforces many of the key concepts and skills introduced in Unit One, by applying them in the context of photography, advertising and film. You will study the techniques of photography, film and advertising and apply them to craft your own messages. Along the way, you will create photographs and storyboards and write reflections on celebrity culture. In Lesson 10 you will create a public service campaign with a print ad and a story board for TV commercial.
Unit 3: Sound and Music
In this unit, you will analyse the social and cultural significance of sound and music. Topics include sound art, musical innovation, Broadway musicals, making movie soundtracks, managing intellectual property rights, and the evolution of the Canadian music scene. In Lesson 15 you will get a chance to write a “pitch” for a new Broadway style musical of your own creation. In it you’ll describe the plot and characters of your new musical and explain why financiers would want to invest in it.
Unit 4: News and Views
This unit examines a particularly important type of media - news. It explores the role of the news media in helping to create our view of the world. You will use your critical media thinking skills to analyse and investigate the different genres of news media. In the last lesson you will use your knowledge of news media codes and conventions to create your own newsmagazine feature article, editorial, and cover.
