Description de cours

This course will help you understand the processes that occur in biological systems. You will study theory and conduct investigations in the areas of biodiversity; evolution; genetic processes; the structure and function of animals; and the anatomy, growth, and function of plants. This course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study, and will help you refine your skills related to scientific investigation.

Note: This course is only delivered online through My ILC. All lessons can be accessed at the ILC website. All assignments must be submitted online using the online work submission tool. Unit 1: Evolution

The theory of evolution by natural selection is the most powerful tool we have for explaining the diversity of life on our planet. In Lesson 1, you will begin your study of evolution by researching the scientists whose theories contributed to the theory of evolution, and create a timeline of the development of the theory. In Lesson 2, you will investigate the evidence for the theory. Lesson 3 explores evolutionary mechanisms in detail. The unit ends with an examination of the factors that affect evolution in Lesson 4.

Unit 2: Genetic Processes

This unit builds on your knowledge of basic genetic processes. In Lesson 5, you will learn the principle of meiosis and how it works. In Lesson 6, you will learn about Mendel’s laws, and practise calculating genetic probabilities through the completion of a variety of Punnett square exercises. In Lesson 7, you will explore the reproductive implications of abnormal meiosis and the genetic disorders that arise from nondisjunction. The unit ends with an examination of various genetic biotechnologies and how they are applied in agriculture and medicine, along with their social and environmental implications, in Lesson 8.

Unit 3: Animals: Structure and Function

The primary focus of this unit will be on human internal systems. The internal systems of organisms such as insects, fish, and amphibians will be mentioned for comparison purposes. You will investigate how three important systems—digestive, respiratory, and circulatory—are related, and what that means for managing human health. Throughout this unit, you will analyze the relationships between changing societal needs (such as an aging population), technological advances (such as magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI), and our understanding of these human internal systems.

Unit 4: Plants: Anatomy, Growth, and Function

In this unit, you will be introduced to the diversity of vascular plants (plants with a system for transporting water and nutrients). You will explore their internal transport systems, reproductive cycles, and roles in creating and maintaining biodiversity. You will investigate the structures and functions of plant tissues using an online microscope. Through activities, you will determine the requirements for plant growth, and examine how the structure of leaves, stems, and roots are adapted to maximize energy capture. Finally, you will investigate the role that plants play in society and the environment. The importance of plants to bio-resources, sustainable agriculture, medicine, and biodiversity preservation will be explored.

Unit 5: Diversity of Living Things

This unit begins with an overview of the six kingdoms of living things and the way all species are identified using the system of binomial nomenclature. You will also learn how to make and use classification keys as a tool for identification. The unit continues with a more detailed examination of each of the kingdoms. You will learn to recognize the important defining features of each one, and study their role in natural ecosystems and human life. As human activities affect the diversity of life everywhere, you will analyze the consequences of human intervention, and examine the impact that climate change might have on diversity.
