Setting Up an Agreement With the ILC

In the public school system, the board superintendent is responsible for setting up an agreement with the ILC. The public school principal must request that the superintendent include his/her school's name on the list of authorized schools that is sent to the ILC.

Inspected private school principals can sign a formal agreement with the ILC on behalf of their school.

No Agreement With the ILC

If a school board does not have an a "Day School Agreement" with the ILC, a student enrolled in that board cannot enrol independently with the ILC as the student's education falls under the school board's responsibility. Ministry guidelines do not permit the ILC to enrol a student who is enrolled in a school board without the school board's permission.

Students of inspected private schools are also not permitted to enrol directly with the ILC.

Course Payment

School boards and school authorities are obliged to cover the ILC fee for their students taking ILC courses. Schools are not permitted to pass on this cost to the student. Some inspected private schools may choose to cover ILC fees for their students.

Distribution of Course Material

  • The ILC sends course material for Day School students to the designated Day School facilitator at the student's school during the school year.
  • In early June, the ILC sends a letter to ask if schools will be open during the summer. If a school's reply is NO, then course material will be sent to students' homes during the summer.

Entering the Mark on the OST

The school board or inspected private school is responsible for entering the credit on the OST and issuing transcripts. The ILC will issue a certificate of course completion confirming the final course mark. Facilitators can also access student marks online. Facilitators who are unsure how to access the information should contact ILC's Day School Officer.

Responsibilities of the Designated Facilitator

The school facilitator is required to:

  • Counsel students regarding appropriate course selection and the responsibilities associated with distance education.
  • Enrol students by completing and submitting precoded Day School enrolment forms.

Facilitators may also:

  • Monitor student progress and encourage students to complete their units in a timely manner.
  • Assist students with scheduling for their course work.

Scheduling

  • The ILC requires five (5) business days to mark, record and return student work for each unit. This does not include mailing time. In addition, all ILC courses have a compulsory final written test. Two (2) days notice are required to schedule a test in Toronto. Additional time is required if the student resides outside Toronto as the final test will have to be mailed to an ILC test supervisor in the student's area. A further five (5) business days after the test is received at ILC are required to provide the final course mark. This should be kept in mind if a student is working toward a deadline or graduation.
