Welcome to the Independent Learning Centre. As Ontario’s designated provider of distance education, our accredited courses enable homeschooling students to study from home and receive credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

We are happy to assist you with your education needs. The information below will help you plan your journey with us. Please review the links below to learn more about homeschooling with ILC.

Depending on where you are in your education program, you may be required to provide different evidence of prior learning to assist us in helping achieving your goal. The registration fee for enrolling in an ILC course is $40.00.

 

Registering with the ILC for Grade 9 Courses:

  • You must be 14 years of age by Dec 31st of the year you want to enroll
  • Successful completion of a grade 8 program (provide an achievement record of your homeschooled grade 8 program)

Registering with the ILC for Grade 10 Courses

  1. Review prerequisites for the course you are interested in taking
  2. Compare your grade 9 course of study against the expectation and course materials for the prerequisites course to determine that you are prepared for the ILC course of your choice. Go to http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/
    select by subject choose the course you are looking for and review the material
  3. Upload the outline of your homeschool grade 9 program and achievement record to your course enrolment. This document is needed support your readiness to take the selected grade 10 ILC course
  4. Equivalency will be determined by the principal after reviewing the information provided

Registering with the ILC for Grades 11 and 12 Courses

Decide whether or not you are taking courses with the ILC for diploma purposes. If the answer is yes and you wish to receive an OSSD from the ILC, please continue here. If the answer is no, please see here.

 

Taking Courses to Achieve an OSSD, starting with courses at Grades 11 or 12

Note: You are required to complete a minimum of 6 courses at the senior level with the ILC, one of which must be a grade 12 English course.

  1. Ensure that you are aware of the diploma requirements, including compulsory courses and prerequisite expectation
  2. You will have to complete community hours and meet the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) requirement
  3. Compare your course of study against the expectations and course materials for the prerequisite courses to determine that you are prepared for the course you wish to take. Go to http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/
    Select by subject and choose the course you are looking for and review the material provided.
  4. Send an outline of the courses of study that you have complete to the ILC, include area of study, topics / units covered, name of programs (if applicable), as well as your record of achievement
  5. ILC will review your enrolment and assist you with making course choices based on your preview learning and the Diploma requirements
  6. Equivalency will be determined by the principal after reviewing the student information

Taking Courses and not working toward an OSSD

  1. Be familiar with the prerequisites course expectations
  2. Compare your grade 10 or 11 course study against the expectations and course material for the prerequisite course to determine that you are prepared for the course of your choice.

    Select by subject and choose the course you are looking for and review the material provided
  3. Upload a synopsis of your prior learning that relates to the subject you want to register in and a record of achievement for the course that will satisfy the spirit of the prerequisite expectations with your registration form
